The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday approved the 18.40-km-long Mumbai Metro Line 12A, which is expected to improve connectivity between Kalyan -Dombivli in Thane district and Navi Mumbai.

At a meeting of the committee at Mantralaya here, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who heads the key panel, directed that the project be completed within three-and-a-half years.

The elevated corridor, which will cost an estimated Rs 13,856.37 crore, will connect Manpada-Katai Naka with Taloja (an industrial town in Navi Mumbai) via Kalyan Phata. It will comprise 12 elevated stations and an integrated flyover, according to an official release.

The metro corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Kalyan-Dombivli and Navi Mumbai and provide better access to industrial and logistics hubs, the release said.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said once completed, the corridor was expected to reduce travel time by 40 to 50 per cent compared to road travel.

The project will include a 6.93-km four-lane integrated flyover and an 8.69-km 6-lane flyover. Daily ridership is estimated at 4.74 lakh passengers, according to the release.

Interchange facilities are proposed at Katai Naka with Metro Line 12 and the bullet train connector, between Katai Naka and Kalyan Phata with Metro Line 14, and at Amandoot with Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1. Feeder bus services are also planned at all stations, it said.

The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion on national highways, encourage the use of public transport and lower carbon dioxide emissions, the release said.

The MMRDA will implement the project and act as the special planning authority for the metro corridor and the integrated flyover.

The committee has also approved the transfer of identified government land in the corridor's influence area to the authority for development and resource mobilisation, stated the release.

Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and senior officials attended the meeting chaired by Fadnavis.
